On this date (July 2, 1777), Marine Captains Matthew Parke and Edward Arrowsmith were ordered by Captain John Paul Jones to help man the Continental Navy sloop Ranger by recruiting with the aid of “a Drum, Fife and Colors”. They managed to recruit 21 men in Providence, Rhode Island.

On this date (July 1, 1997), Army General Wesley Clark is appointed NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), succeeding General George Joulwan. The post of SACEUR has been filled by a United States general officer since the first to hold the post, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed in 1951.

On this date (June 30,1953), United States Air Force Lieutenant Henry “Hank” Buttleman, 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing, became the 36th and youngest ace of the Korean War, having just turned 24. He accomplished this feat only 12 days after his first kill. (An ace has five kills.) Colonel James K. Johnson, 4th Fighter-Interceptor Wing, qualified as the eighth “double ace” of the war, with 10 total kills.
